Travel to Madagascar. With the Sierra Madre Mountains on one side and the Pacific Ocean on the other, the cliffside Cala de Mar is a Mexican idyll, surrounded by tropical forest. The hotel has a fleet of bicycles that guests can take to explore the miles of nature trails around the property — assuming they want to leave at all. Be prepared for a “one-of-a-kind” shopping extravaganza. Picture, farmers’ bazaars bustling with the energy of weathered farm women selling local delicacies such as pickled herring, home-made cabbage rolls and organic cheese. The fabric of life offered by the old city includes encounters with artisans displaying exquisitely crafted folk art such as hand painted eggs or hand embroidered garments. Antique treasures abound, but keep in mind that items over 100 years old are not allowed out of the country.

Occupying an 1880 Neo-Renaissance building that first served as the city’s opera house, the Mandarin Oriental, Munich, attracts guests who appreciate a bit of formality. Service is flawless, as T+L readers have come to expect from any of the hotel group’s properties; the flagship restaurant, Matsuhisa, serves Peruvian-Japanese cuisine in a sleekly contemporary space. Not so long ago, the travel consumer did not have these resources available to them, and had to rely on the blurb in the travel brochure. It was not unknown for some companies to contact travel journalists to write wonderful romantic prose about the travel destination in question. The only problem was, that sometimes the journalist had never visited the resort, and so the description was a complete work of fiction.

Very useful information. Oh! it must’ve been a tiring 10-day trip, huh? I’d bet you’ve enjoyed it. Numerous pristine alpine lakes and verdant forest trails abound in the beautiful mountains of the Grand Teton National Park, and we spent many of our days exploring those sites outside of town during our two-week vacation. I’ll share those experiences in other posts. Budget travel in Latin America has many advantages far beyond the monetary savings. For instance, some of the most amazing and unforgettable sights just happen to be located in some of the world’s least expensive countries. These easy to afford, hard to forget sights include the Incan wonders of Machu Picchu in Peru and the wonderful Mayan ruins scattered throughout some of the least costly parts of Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras. A budget Latin American vacation can include such exciting adventures as exploring an unspoiled rainforest, white water rafting down some of the world’s most beautiful rivers, climbing active and extinct volcanoes, and diving off some of the world’s most spectacular coral reefs.

When asked why they do not travel, one of the most frequently cited reasons is lack of money. Lack of funds, however, does not need to be a barrier to traveling the world. Obviously if you’re flat broke you may not be able to travel as you wish, but most people have at least some disposable income, and it can be surprisingly inexpensive to travel to many places. Nervous and obsessed in my planning, I never felt threatened or uncomfortable in Mexico. The people were friendly and helpful. It was great to experience their life rather than that of a tourist. Since the closer of the Suez Chanel, the country seems to have lost its character. But that’s all in my book. On we go to Colombo. On arrival we checked into the Magnificent Gale Face Hotel. The next day we went scuba diving at Hikaduwa, with beautiful clear water and reefs. We hired the equipment from a sports diver at the Coral Gardens Hotel.
