Tourists generally abstain from traveling in autumn because they think that the weather will not be ideal for their trip, preferring to save up their holidays until summer. Travel tip number one would be to get good insurance, I haven’t been to Nepal but Tibet is very similar and health care is pretty basic by our standards in a lot of places and the altitude sure takes some getting used to if you are a coastal dweller :). Travel light and be prepared to enjoy the people and the country and you will have a ball especially if you make an effort to meet the locals. The next morning, after my travel companions and I had a tasty dinner down at the lodge and spent a night in the canoer cabins, we finished organizing our gear, transferring canned foods to reusable plastic containers (because cans aren’t allowed in the Boundary Waters-read the BWCAW rules ) and watched the Boundary Waters Leave No Trace video. Then Bonnie issued us our permit, fitted us for PFDs and paddles, and we loaded our gear and boats for the shuttle to our entry point on Bearskin Lake.

At the last minute I read the fine-print that Brazilian regulation requires travelers to provide both copies of doctors’ prescriptions and pharmacy receipts for drugs being brought into the country. Having a cornucopia ranging from malaria pills to less exotic fare, I had inadvertently overlooked this requirement. Fortunately, in this digital age, my neighborhood drug store could provide travel insurance printouts of both so the problem was averted. (This is important to check out before traveling to a new country. I was surprised to discover before a Mideast trip that over 200 prescriptions and over-the-counter drugs legal in the US could result in a significant mandatory jail term if not properly documented.) Of course, being overly prepared, I was not required to provide documentation.

The organizers of this trip offer lunch on the banks of the Snake River after the whitewater experience. It was fun talking to people that had just experienced the same thing that we had and comparing notes. After this, we took buses back to our point of origin. If you looking for a less traveled area to explore and spend a little down time you will want to visit Custer State Park. This park is just outside of the Black Hills so if you have always wanted to see Mount Rushmore it is just a quick trip. Excellent tips, being a backpacker myself, I’ve noticed when traveling with my parents how much money they waste.
